“SMILE” has been nominated by The National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) with seven nominations in four categories for the 50th Grammy Awards. The nominations are:
- Best Jazz Instrumental Album by an individual or group
- Best Engineered Album (James Linahon of LMP Records)
- Best Instrumental Arrangement (“Smile” arranged by John Cacavas)
- Best Instrumental Arrangement (“Laura” arranged by John Cacavas)
- Best Instrumental Arrangement (“You Can’t Go Home Again” written and arranged by Don Sebesky)
- Best Jazz Instrumental Solo (Jim Linahon, trumpet solo on “You Can’t Go Home Again”)
- Best Jazz Instrumental Solo (Tom Ranier, piano solo on “Tangerine”)
The album was produced by Gretchen Hatfield, Warren Hatfield and James Linahon and recorded at the LMP Studios in Claremont, California. The CD features Hatfield on saxophone and oboe with a jazz rhythm section and strings as an homage to jazz legend Paul Desmond.
